Tidbits of History

In 605 BC the nation of Judah fell under the control of the Babylonians. The growing government was in great need of well-educated men that they could train to be leaders and so the finest young Jewish men of nobility were taken into captivity to become members in the Babylonian king’s court. The prophet Daniel and his three companions were among the slaves. The three men were renamed with Babylonian names: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

The men were faithful to God and lived lives of exemplarity integrity. They became leaders in the nation, which stirred the jealousy of their Babylonian peers and even the nation’s leaders. King Nebuchadnezzar was enraged when Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refused to worship the Babylonian gods or bow to the golden image he had erected. The king threatened to throw the men to their death if they refused to denounce their God.

The men, with total trust in their God, explained to the king that whether he threw them into the furnace or not, that their God would protect them always. The infuriated Nebuchadnezzar execution furnace be heated seven times hotter than usual. The men were bound and thrown into the furnace.

An angel of God immediately saved the men releasing them from their ties. When the King saw four men in the furnace, unbound and walking around, he called to them to come out. King Nebuchadnezzar then conceded to the power of their God, even going as far as to make a decree, whereby any nation who says anything against the God of the Jews is an act of war.

The Daniel-Fast explained

In those days I Daniel was mourning three full weeks. I ate no pleasant bread, neither came flesh nor wine in my mouth, neither did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled. Daniel 10:2-3

The Daniel Fast is a partial fast practiced by millions of Christians around the world. The definition of a biblical fast is to restrict some or all food for a spiritual purpose. The Daniel Fast is modeled after the fasting experiences of the Hebrew prophet when
