Late one night, a Cree girl's kookum, or grandmother, shares a bedtime story about how the world came to be. Long ago, embers fell from the sky and became part of every living thing, leaving a fire that still burns within us today.
As her kookum's story unfolds, the girl learns to recognize that inner fire in all of her emotions. It glows with joy, smolders with anger, and grows stronger through laughter and love. The story connects those feelings to family, ancestors, and the courage to face difficult things.
Written by Rebecca Lafond of the Beardy's and Okemasis Cree Nation and illustrated in watercolor by Shoshone-Bannock artist Aly McKnight, Fire in Your Belly is a poetic picture book about Indigenous storytelling, emotional awareness, and the connections carried from one generation to the next.
