Tidbits of History - Thorp

Thorp is an agricultural community nestled among the rolling hills in the Center of Washington State. Named by the railroad in 1878, after Mortimer Thorp, one of the first settlers. It is a magnificent area of fertile, well-irrigated land and was encouraged in its growth by the construction of the railroad, the timber industry, irrigation canals, and agricultural settlement. It was the first place that the Chicago, Milwaukee-St. Paul railway & The Northern Pacific Railway crossed. The Taneum Ditch Company was built in 1873 and the West Side Canal in 1889 for irrigation. In approximately 1879 a sawmill, powered by water, was built. In 1907 an electric plant was installed there. This gave Thorp the distinction of being the smallest, unincorporated, town in the northwest having electric lights. The North Star Flour Mill produced flour and other grain products by 1883.

Other business interest were represented by two general stores, a fine hotel, drug store, doctor’s office, meat market, black smith shop, ice house, shoemaker, 14 saloons & a dance hall, confectionery, wooden box factory, theater, creamery, Post Office, and public schools.

Today, Thorp is enjoyed as a quiet rural community, with a post office, public school, tavern, church, and agricultural surroundings. The historic Thorp Mill Museum is open 11:00 am - 3:00pm.

History of Tortellini

Legend has it that Tortellini was created as a tribute to Venus, the goddess of love. The legend states that when Venus stayed in a tavern on the outskirts of the city of Bologna, the innkeeper spied on her through the keyhole of her room, but could catch only a glimpse of her navel. Spellbound, he went to the kitchen and, to capture this vision, shaped fresh egg pasta into the navel-sized Tortellini. Tortellini remains one of Italy's classic pastas and has become a favorite in America and around the world. Filled with a variety of flavorful ingredients it remains one of the essentials of Italian cuisine.

Thorpellini Tortellini Soup is the original soup that established Rill Foods into the dry packaged soup market.
